Hazmat (Dangerous Goods)

Hazmat refers to products classified as dangerous goods by Amazon — items containing flammable, pressurized, or regulated materials that require special handling, storage, and shipping procedures within the FBA network.

What Is Hazmat on Amazon?

Hazmat — short for hazardous materials — is Amazon's classification for products that contain substances requiring special care during storage, handling, or shipping. Common examples include certain batteries, aerosols, flammable liquids, pressurized containers, and products with specific chemical compositions. Amazon places these items under stricter controls within its FBA fulfillment network.

How It Affects FBA Sellers

If your product is flagged as hazmat, it goes through Amazon's dangerous goods review process before it can be stored or sold via FBA. During this review, your listing may be inactive and your inventory held. Products that don't pass the review — or that lack the required safety documentation — can be rejected or removed from FBA entirely. Some hazmat products are also restricted to specific fulfillment centers, which can affect storage fees and delivery speeds.

What You Need to Do

If you're selling or planning to sell products that might fall under hazmat regulations, preparation matters:

  • Check whether your product requires a Safety Data Sheet (SDS) — Amazon will request this during review
  • Submit accurate product information including battery type, flammability, and chemical composition where applicable
  • Review Amazon's dangerous goods guidelines before sending inventory to avoid delays or rejections
  • Be aware that hazmat storage fees are typically higher than standard FBA fees
