Amazon Advantage

Amazon Advantage is a consignment-based vendor program for publishers, labels, and media creators to sell directly through Amazon. Learn how it works, who it's for, and what to watch out for.

What is Amazon Advantage?

Amazon Advantage is a self-service vendor program built for independent publishers, music labels, film studios, and other media content creators. You supply your products to Amazon on consignment—Amazon lists them, handles fulfillment, and pays you after sales occur. Unlike Seller Central, Amazon becomes the seller of record, meaning customers see "Sold by Amazon" on your product pages.

Who is Amazon Advantage For?

  • Independent book publishers and self-published authors selling physical copies
  • Music labels and independent musicians distributing physical albums or vinyl
  • Film and video production companies selling DVDs or Blu-rays
  • Software publishers distributing physical media boxes
  • Any media creator who wants Amazon to manage fulfillment and retail presence

How Amazon Advantage Works

You enroll your titles in the program and ship inventory to Amazon's fulfillment centers. Amazon sets the retail price, manages customer service, and handles returns. You earn a percentage of each sale based on your agreed terms. When inventory runs low, Amazon sends purchase orders for replenishment—so you refill stock rather than managing inventory yourself.

Amazon Advantage vs. Seller Central

  • Advantage: Amazon buys and resells your products—you operate as a vendor, not a marketplace seller
  • Seller Central: You control pricing, inventory levels, and the full selling relationship
  • Advantage works well for media titles with predictable, steady demand
  • Seller Central offers more flexibility, pricing control, and access to seller analytics
  • Both programs carry different fee structures and operational expectations

Key Limitations to Be Aware Of

Amazon controls the retail price in the Advantage program, which limits your ability to manage pricing strategy or enforce MAP policies. Margins can be thin depending on negotiated terms. Payment cycles can also be slower compared to Seller Central. If you need pricing flexibility or real-time inventory control, Seller Central may be a better fit.
